Mr. Thomas Houston Biography: Thomas Houston Jr. better known as “Tom Houston” was born in San Diego, California to Thomas Houston Sr. and the late Frances Houston February 15, 1958. At the age of 2 they relocated to Washington D.C. where he was heavily influenced by his small yet intimate immediate family. He grew up revering his mother and her hard work despite being raised by his father. His mother was stern, hard and ungiving but showed her love and support by coming to every game. He often followed behind his big sister-Ronda (just a year apart)- who never let anyone beat up on him and was often his partner in crime. They often won local dance contests and are still very close, He was cultivated by his grandmothers Mary and Meme they instilled morals and values in caring ways and although they loved him, he didn’t get away with much. As for his drive to succeed above all and be something different and special that came from his father who started as an enlisted Naval cadet but after 4 years became an entrepreneur and never settled for less than what he thought he deserved. This was the substance that formulated Tom Houston-- starting rec sports at the age of 10 and football at the age of 12 he played much in school, well class mostly but with sports he was able to gain discipline and purpose. Named the most improved junior defensively, achieving the All Metro title his senior year and winning the conference championship Tom graduated Woodson High school in 1975 and acquired the nickname "Big Nasty" as he went into college. He received a full athletic scholarship to the Wisconsin Badgers. There he played defensive lineman from 76-81. Going through much adversity he developed a “never quit” mentality and never settled. He started multiple times, his most notable game was against Purdue where he had 6 tackles. Through hard work and consistent training he went to several NFL camps and was signed to the Washington Federal’s USFL team in 82. There he was trained as an offensive linemen. Summer of 83 he obtained just about every little boys dream of becoming a player in the NFL. He signed a 2 year contract as a free agent with the Green Bay Packers. Unfortunately after a few pre- season games he tore his ACL and was placed on injury reserve. He was hoping to return but after 6 knee operations and several months of physical therapy the injury proved a little more complicated then expected. It will take him to tell you what happened during what could be considered dark times… But on the bright side... He married to his 1st wife at the end of 84 and became a proud dad of a baby girl (Tammie) in summer of 85. He went on to have another beautiful daughter (Tajha) with his 1st wife in 1990. He remarried in 1996 to Patti Houston where he had 3 additional children 2 boys and 1 girl. He shared his passion of sports and football with his eldest son (Zack) by couching his football team all the way to high school and assisting with training of his next son (Trey) with basketball. He also went on to become a “gymnastics dad” by supporting his youngest daughter (Toni) by attending every meet just as his mother did for him. Tom now works as an operations manager. He continues to thrive embracing his family role as husband, daddy, dad, pop and soon to be grandad. He still believes as he did when he started to never quit and keep trying.
