Come and get your soul food...... Since the days Africans were enslaved in America they have survived off of the food their slave master considered the bad parts of the animals they were eating. The African people used their creativity to create meals that have lasted to this day. These meals were so good that they became the preferred meals over the meals the slave owners were used to eating. Today's effects of generations of eating soul food are not as glorious as one might expect. According to BioMed Central's Public Health Reviews, 46% of African Americans over the age of 19 suffer from cardiovascular disease. The leading risk factors for heart disease and stroke currently are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, current smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity, according to CDC data. 46% of black men and women over the age of 20 have the highest prevalence of hypertension. In this episode we explored black Americas attachment to foods that can be harming us depending on how we prepare it.
