During this episode of Lessons from the Screen we will be jumping into School Shootings. The history of school shootings will be looked at as well as looking to see if there have been mass shootings in Black Schools in recent times. We will also be looking at the political debate and how both conservatives and liberals are using the Black Community to advance their goals.
Over the past decade school shootings have become a regular part of the gun debate in America. As these incidents garner increasing levels of media attention and have become keystone political issues, our sense of them continue to shape our sense of guns in America and to some extent White Privilege in America. As many of us have commented at various points over the past month, especially given the recent shooting in South Florida, school shootings don’t happen in Black Schools. For many of us this is rooted in the assumption that Black People just don’t commit mass murder in lone wolf type environments, for others it’s that Black People have a better sense of controlling their rage, and for others Black Schools are already a fortress.
