My name is Gale May. I am currently a fashion designer/advisor for Kuumba Creations, LLC. I am originally from Springfield, Ohio. I have created stylish clothing designs and alterations since 1969. In 1978, I developed my trade at the Clarissa School of Fashion Design in Pittsburgh, PA. 1989 I became a 5 time gospel recording artist with ‘Delegation Mass Choir’. I worked for The Springfield Urban League and Community Center, Inc., for over 11 years where I served as the Administrative Assistant for the Community Victims Compensation Program; Ohio Attorney General Office. I then attended Leadership Clark County, Springfield, Ohio where I became a novice grant/proposal writer while serving as a grassroots community advocate from 1987 to 2003.
As “grassroots advocate, I developed programs to aid low-income children and families with wrap-around services; nutritious food, new and gently used clothing. I also cultured African American community awareness through festivals and block parties; Kwanzaa, Juneteenth, Jubilation. For many years, I served as the President for the Great Lakes Resident Council and Neighborhood Garden within the Lincoln Park Project Housing. I was an active board member for The American Red Cross; Cultural Diversity Board, Children’s Hospital, Springfield Urban League, Leadership Clark County and the Ohio Emergency Food Coalition before relocating to Tallahassee in 2005.
Since moving to Tallahassee, I have volunteered by sharing my cultural experiences through Kwanzaa and occasional day activities for Casa Calderon residents, ‘House of Kuumba’, ‘The Walking Brand’, ‘On The Shoulders of Giants’ and have helped to donate clothing, cook and give food to Tallahassee’s less fortunate residents with ‘Project Rescue Ministries. I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with many more of Tallahassee’s young generational power advocates.
